– A TRIBUTE TO STEVE PAXTON AND ART OF IMPROVISATION

In this years’ Performing Underscore #2 we are tributing Steve Paxton, who passed away in February 2024, and other pioneers in the lineage of improvisational and somatic forms who passed recently such as Trisha Brown and Joan Skinner, among others.

On stage this year, we have invited three international dancers with over thirty to fifty years of dedication to improvisation; Eva Karczag (NYC/HU), Charlie Morrissey (UK) and Bettina Neuhaus (NE/DE) to share their dance practice in an improvised performance.

They will be accompanied by a live score by musician Herman Müntzing; pioneer of improvisational and experimental music in Malmö and light design by Uli Ruchlinski.

Performing Underscore #2 is a performance experiment. Practice as performance. An exhibition of a practice. Through time the choreography unfolds in front of us through the choices the dancers make in the moment. In a shared journey the audience and dancers make discoveries together. It is a choreography of unpredictability, intimacy, listening and relationality; a choreography of embodied dance history and personal archives.

Collectively these three dancers’ mentors are pioneers such as Steve Paxton, Lisa Nelson, Deborah Hay, Julian Hamilton, Trisha Brown, Mary Fulkerson, Joan Skinner, Andre Bernard and more. We will witness dancers with a shared lineage, but also their own separate paths within improvisation, meet in dialogue on the stage of Dansstationen in an unrehearsed event.

Please join us in this celebration of dancers as living archives; of improvisation as a rigorous art form and way of moving through the world.”
