Love and hidden wounds: when same-sex relationships meet violence

In her piece MASC, choreographer Sofia Södergård portrays an intense longing for love – a longing that we all carry with us, but which can have so many different faces. She takes us on an intense journey exploring same-sex love, violence in close relationships and the fight for freedom.

MASC is a work about the double shame of coming out and suddenly discovering that you are in a destructive relationship that feels impossible to escape. In a mix of reality and fiction, Södergård combines drama, fantasy, seriousness, humour and absurdity. From kitchen sink realism to escapist queer club nights, the performance paints a picture of a life where a painful reality lies hidden behind a polished facade.

Sofia Södergård
Sofia Södergård is a dancer, choreographer, actor and DJ. Having done her training on the New York club and street dance scene, at Balettakademien in Stockholm and at Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts, she has a broad repertoire that is always rooted in feminism and challenging issues.

Södergård is one of the founders of the dance company P*fect, which has performed at Sadler’s Wells in London, Melodifestivalen in Sweden and Juste Debout in Paris and has been associated with Lady Gaga. She has also toured as her drag-king alter ego Qarl Qunt with both Dancenet Sweden and Sweden’s national touring theatre, Riksteatern.

In recent years, she has choreographed productions such as the musical “Cabaret” at Den Nationale Scene, Familjen Kaos’ “Slå Pattarna i Taket” and “Angels in America” at Dramaten. She was also involved in Falk Richter’s show “PRIDE” at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen.

Sofia Södergård toured with Dansnät Sverige in the autumn of 2022, featuring in performance artist Charlotte Engelkes’ work “Transplantation”.
