A FEMINIST EMBRACE OF MTV’S SCANTILY CLAD HIP-HOP BABES
Daring and with refreshing clarity, Cherish Menzo dissects the misogyny of hip-hop culture and its legendary female icons.
The 90s, MTV and scantily clad video vixens who shake their booties to hip-hop are a perfect example of the male gaze run amok, reducing (especially black) women to props tasked with boosting the male ego.
But there is ambivalence here, because despite being sexualised by rap and being called a ‘bitch’ and a ‘slut’, she is strong and independent. She refuses to be defined by others and expressly challenges the expectations of her as a woman.
The video vixen is a controversial stereotype – infamous, debated, almost iconic. In Cherish Menzo’s work Jezebel, we see her in the flesh, deconstructed in all her complexity, fairly and perceptively.
Jezebel is a bold work in which Menzo has managed to shed fresh light on the video vixen in a way that both challenges and questions what this hip-hop icon would look like today.
